Book Reviews

Erik Zuercher has updated his most valuable modern history of Turkey, which traces the origins of modern Turkey to the early reforms in the Ottoman empire in the late eighteen century. For those interested in Turkish nationalism it offers crucial insights into the continuity and discontinuity of the early reforms to the Young Ottomans and the Young Turks and Kemalism. This modern history sets out to be a textbook on Turkey and is very useful introductory reading on the subject. It is enriched by an extensive bibliographical survey and a ‘who’s who guide’ to Turkish history.
